Littleport sits on the edge of a very flat area known as the Fens and still retains the same charm American servicemen grew to love during the Second World War. The village has a historic link to Harley Davidson, where there is a monument of an original motorcycle on display. The village is also known for the ‘Littleport riots which took place in 1816 and from where the phrase ‘being read the riot act‘ originated. The ‘High Street’ or shopping area is populated by a post office, three pubs, two fish and chips establishments and a tea room as well as the newsagents and convenience stores. There are numerous places to eat locally including ‘The Swan on the river’ you can eat and watch the riverboats pass by. This is a wonderful base for exploring the very best Cambridgeshire has to offer, including the bustling city of Ely.
Make sure to visit Ely Cathedral, a Norman Gothic-style cathedral with an on-site museum and a large tower with 288 steps, perfect for history enthusiasts. Also nearby is the 17th century Oliver Cromwell's House, which has since been restored and shows how the political leader once lived. Nature lovers will delight in exploring the Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve where you can explore the stunning wetland scenery.
