Algonales is nowadays one of the most important towns in the south of Spain for lovers of gliding, where a large number of people addicted to this sport from many countries of the world congregate.
In the northern part of the province of Cadiz and in the vicinity of the Sierra de Lijar, between the rivers Guadalete and Gadalporcún is the town of Algodonales.
Its origin is linked to the repopulation of the reconquered lands at the beginning of the 16th century. The distribution of the land around 1520 by the family of the Duchy of Arcos, the Ponce de León, all of these events mark the origin of the town of Algodonales. The great fertility and the large amount of water that the land has attracted neighbours from Zahara de la Sierra, to settle in the fertile plain that extends to the foot of the Sierra de Líjar. Due to the large number of settlers from the town of Zahara (the main town), in the mid-15th century the Council of Zahara started a lawsuit with the Duke of Arcos, owner of these lands, so that the main town would not be depopulated, so he demolished the houses of the settlers. Despite the continuous destruction, in 1566 it became a village, obtained a papal bull and a church dedicated to Santa Ana was built. At the end of the 16th century it became an important town, and was renamed "Puebla de los Algodonales".
During the War of Independence, in 1810, Napoleon's troops set fire to the town, and in these events almost a tenth of the population died. A reflection of this tragedy is reflected in the current coat of arms (a burnt down house), with which the Agodolaneños wanted to pay homage to all the villagers who died in these events. The heroic behaviour of the town's defenders against the Napoleonic army was the argument used to demand the segregation of the parent entity Zahara de la Sierra. In 1817, King Ferdinand VII granted Algodonales the title of town and its own municipality of 23,000 fanegas, at which point it became definitively independent from Zahara de la Sierra.
Nowadays it is one of the most important towns in the south of Spain for lovers of gliding, with a large number of gliders from all over the world.
