Equipped with every comfort such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi, Un Soffio dal Mare is the perfect starting point for visiting Calopezzati and its surroundings. Calopezzati is a charming village in the province of Cosenza, nestled between the rolling hills of Calabria and the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. With its roots going back to antiquity, this small centre preserves intact the charm of tradition and the warmth of a community tied to its history.
Among the most representative monuments are the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Convento dei Riformati and the castle, one of the best preserved in southern Italy, which dominates the town with its sober grandeur. Calopezzati is also synonymous with local identity and pride.
Its popular traditions, religious festivals, simple and genuine gastronomy and its people's strong sense of belonging make it a place where time seems to slow down, leaving room for authenticity.
Nestled between olive groves and cultivated fields, caressed by the sea breeze and protected by the hills, Calopezzati offers a perfect balance of nature, history and community life, making it a small pearl of Calabria to be discovered calmly and respectfully. One of the most fascinating curiosities linked to Calopezzati concerns the origin of its name, shrouded in evocative popular legends.
According to one of the versions most recounted by local elders, the name is said to derive from the dialect expression 'và calopèzzati', meaning 'put yourself in his shoes' or 'behave well', an invitation to empathy and hospitality that would reflect the welcoming nature of its inhabitants.
Local legends also tell of a secret passage joining the castle to the friars' convent, used in ancient times to escape raids or for discreet movements of nobles and clergy.
Although never confirmed, this tale still fascinates those who visit the village, fuelling the mystery and charm of its ancient stones.
In summer, then, the village comes alive with festivals, shows and historical re-enactments, during which one can listen to the tales passed down orally by the people of Calopezzo, who proudly guard the memory of a past rich in symbols and meanings.
